Ski with the Stars: Where Celebrities Are Skiing This Winter

You could be forgiven for thinking a trip to Los Angeles is the best place to go celebrity spotting all year round. However, in the winter many of California's celebrities in residence swap sun-kissed beaches for the snow-capped peaks of the finest ski resorts.

It's not just Hollywood A-listers and glamorous pop stars that love to unwind by hitting the slopes, either. From European royalty to the world's fabulously rich, it seems that skiing and celebrity fit together like hand and glove.

Are you the ultimate autograph hunter? If so, here are four of the ski resorts you should be looking to visit this winter.

Meribel, France

Located slap bang in the middle of The Alps' famous Three Valleys, Meribel consists of several villages that sit between 1,100m and 1,750m above sea level. Meribel first became a beacon for the fabulously rich and famous when screen siren Brigitte Bardot was photographed on its slopes in the 1960s.

In modern times, Meribel has played host to a wealth of famous stars, including Natalie Imbruglia and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Plus, Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame recently bought a million pound chalet here.

Although the Meribel region boasts some of The Alps' best skiing conditions, hotels in the area are few and far between and most visitors stay in private chalets. As such, the limited accommodation options in the area are expensive. Alternatively, you could venture into Meribel's glitzy neighbour Courchevel, where accommodation is plentiful and the visiting celebrities are there to be seen.

Deer Valley, Utah, America

The Deer Valley resort is the essence of exclusivity, a quality beloved by most celebrities. There are only a limited number of tickets sold each day and snowboarders are not allowed anywhere near the slope. If you're lucky enough to get in, your chances of spotting a celebrity at Deer Valley are extremely high.

The Sundance Film Festival is held annually at the end of January in nearby Park City. During the two week festival, Park City is descended upon by a roster of the world's biggest stars, who enjoy mixing pleasure with the business of promoting their latest movie.

Deer Valley also holds the Celebrity SkiFest every December, which sees a variety of stars from film and television congregate on the resort's slopes to raise money for charity. In past years the Celebrity SkiFest has attracted stars such as Neil Patrick Harris and Larry David from the sitcom 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'.

Aspen, Colorado, America

For over 40 years now Aspen has been the winter playground of the world's most rich and famous. In fact, there must be an unwritten rule unbeknown to us mere mortals that once you reach a certain level of fame and fortune, a ski trip to Aspen becomes obligatory. Almost every A-lister from Jack Nicholson and Ryan Gosling to Mariah Carrey and Blake Lively has been spotted in Aspen at least once.

Perhaps unfairly, Aspen has gained a reputation with some for attracting celebrities who want to see and be seen enjoying the dream lifestyle, rather than ski. However Aspen does boast a number of world-class slopes, too, and Ajax Mountain above the town is where you'll find the celebrities who also enjoy to power through the powder.

Klosters, Switzerland

Many people have dubbed Klosters, a beautiful resort that emits an atmosphere of romanticism, the Aspen of Europe. And with the luxury Swiss resort attracting a who's who of the world's most rich and powerful it's not hard to see why.

For example, Prince Charles hits the slopes of Klosters regularly, and Prince William and Kate Middleton's first paparazzi smooch was captured at the resort. If you prefer to swap snowbound sovereigns for an alternative brand of celebrity-based royalty, the Beckhams are often to be found traversing Klosters' slopes.

While the resort offers a selection of superlative skiing options, it's perhaps Klosters' agreeable nightlife that keeps the royals coming back for more. The Casa Antica Nightclub, as well as the Chesa bar, have both proved to be popular royal hotspots in the past.
